Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant: Find the Best Option for You
We exercise every day, we eat healthy, we notice where our food is produced, but sometimes skincare and body products are one of the last things on our list of choices. Even if some switch to cleaner body care, finding the right deodorant is usually the longest process—at least until now.
So, what does "natural" deodorant really mean? And will your armpits smell after using it?
Check if you're using deodorant or antiperspirant
First things first, deodorants and antiperspirants sometimes get put into the same category but they do very different jobs. Antiperspirants (as the name suggests) helps to reduce the amount of sweat that your sweat gland releases, by using various forms of aluminium. Antiperspirants, aluminium will actually prevent sweat from coming out.
When this oily, thick, film-like sweat is released from our body, it's actually odourless — and it's only when the bacterium on your skin starts feasting on it and gives that bad aroma.
Unlike antiperspirants, deodorants don't affect how much you sweat; instead, they help mask the smell. Natural deodorants just mask the bad odour by combating the bacteria that produce it. This means that you might still sweat (which is good and healthy!) when going to your crossfit class, but you will keep freshness around you.
Many people have made the switch as it appeared "safer" after claims that the aluminium in antiperspirants clog the lymph nodes (because it "blocks" the sweat glands), which could lead to breast cancer.
MAKE THE SWITCH
If you're ready to stop covering your skin with chemicals, this is the perfect choice. Transitioning away from antiperspirants means allowing your sweat glands to breathe freely, as they will no longer be blocked. Once the aluminium salts are no longer clogging your pores, you might notice increased sweating initially—this is part of your body’s detox phase. During this process, you may experience some irritation, redness, or dry patches as the aluminium works its way out of your lymphatic system. To support your body through this detox, stay hydrated and drink plenty of water to aid the cleansing process.
